Context

Paediatric nephrology, or kidney care for children, is a specialisation practised by a relatively small group of doctors worldwide. At European level, they are united in the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology. They meet annually at varying locations in Europe to be updated on current and new developments and to meet formally and informally.

In cooperation with Live Online Events [LOE] and the congress committee, we prepared a programme for the online participants of a two-day hybrid congress in the RAI. The open studio was situated in the congress foyer, allowing live visitors to attend regular sessions as well. In the studio, I hosted doctors, parents and patients[associations] for interviews and panel discussions. Sometimes live, sometimes online via a video link or a mix thereof. A variety of topics were covered, such as shared-decision making, the cost of medication, medical-ethical dilemmas and generational differences between renal specialists. The [English] talks gained depth through the use of clearly formulated statements, well-prepared interviews with leading doctors and the safety for patients to share their experiences in peace. At the end of the conference, one doctor asked "which hospital was I affiliated with?". Perhaps the crowning glory of all the preparation!
